Ok, this is obviously my favorite ship. I'm not trying to use this section to convince you to join my ship. If you want to see the essay I wrote on how I found myself as a new crewmember of this ship go to Shipping debates. If you're a R/Hr shipper, you won't be finding anything that you like on this page. I suggest you check out SugarQuill. If however, like me, you sail on the HMS Pumpkin Pie then welcome, pull up a deck chair, and enjoy the breeze!
There are so many little things in canon that point to this ship that it becomes very hard to not see it after a while. JKR that master of plots and surprises has been trying to lead everyone astray by pointing out Ron likes Hermione, and suggesting that is where it's all at. She even goes so far to tell us that Harry and Hermione are platonic friends. But that's ok. That is all they have to be for now. After all, we are striving for a forever marraige for these two, not just a fun time in school. And don't people often look at their best friends and find more? I've heard the best friends make the best lovers *wink*
There is an implicit trust and understanding that permeates their relationship, and allows them to communicate silently and on a deeper level. Ron and Hermione don't share this understanding, which is what ultimately strains their relationship, and keeps them from connecting.
There is so much in the text that shows just how close Harry and Hermione are, and points to something lying so deep and true that it isn't surprising that neither of them have noticed it yet. Have you noticed them?
I present to you the moments.
From the first moment on the train, Hermione has shown an understanding of Harry and a complete lack of awe about his fame. This has to be one of the most important things for Harry's girl to have as they need to feel comfortable around each other, and it lends itself as one of the first bonding moments between them. She acknowledges it, and then moves on.
"(after introductions)"Are you really?" said Hermione. "I know all about you, of course - I got a few extra books for background reading, and you're in Modern Magical History and The Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts and Great Wizarding Events of the Twentieth Century."
"Am I?" said Harry feeling dazed.
"Goodness, didn't you know, I'd have found out everything I could if it was me," said Hermione. "Do either of you know what house you'll be in? I've been asking around, and I hope I'm in Gryffindor, it sounds by far the best;..."(SS pg 106)".
She shows her concern for Harry's overall wellbeing as soon as they meet as well. She comes to tell him what he needs to do to be ready when the train stops, or perhaps it was to check if he'd had trouble because she asks whether or not they'd been fighting. Whatever her ultimate motive in coming back was, there can be no denying two things in Harry's best interest happened. Draco Malfoy left before he could harm them, and they were ready for school when the train pulled in. While Harry greets this intrusion silently, Ron reacts with disdain and anger, setting their relationship of misunderstanding and arguments.
He [Ron] turned to Hermione. "Can we help you with something?"
"You'ld better hurry up and put your robes on, I've just been up to the front to ask the conductor, and he says we're nearly there. You haven't been fighting, have you? You'll be in trouble before we even get there!" (pg 110)
"Scabbers has been fighting, not us," said Ron, scowling at her. "Would you mind leaving while we change?"
"All right - I only came in here because people outside are behaving very childishly, racing up and down the corridors," said Hermione in a sniffy voice. "And you've got dirt on your nose, by the way, did you know?"
Ron glared at her as she left."
I also find it endearing that she follows Harry into the same boat. This right on the heels of Ron telling her off too. She must really want to be around Harry!
"No more'n four to a boat!" Hagrid called, pointing to a fleet of little boats sitting in the water by the shore. Harry and Ron were followed into their boat by Neville and Hermione. (pg 111).
There are so many little things she does the first week that Harry hardly seems to notice, but that imply she must be watching him very closely. She mutters all the spells she's ever learned when he becomes panicked about a test. She whispers about the ceiling of the Great Hall to him when he looks up at it. And she cheers him when he gets sorted in Gryffindor, making sure Harry sits by her at the feast, though they weren't sorted close together. She tells them all about flying tips she's read about at breakfast the day of their first flying lesson.
She's also trying to protect Harry from himself and others. The whole first potions lesson is a prime example. Hermione might've been trying to prove she wasn't a dunderhead, or she might've been acting as a know-it-all. BUT her exaggerated hand waving leads me to believe that she was trying to get Snape's attention off Hary. It didn't hurt that she knew the answer anyway. (pp 137-8) Then there was the conflict with Malfoy during their first flying lesson. Hermione tried to keep Harry from flying then, and dueling with him later.
She's not afraid to call Harry out when he's being stupid either. The first time is when he goes to meet Malfoy for the midnight duel.
"Malfoy tricked you," Hermione said to Harry. "You realize that, don't you? He was never going to meet you - Filch knew someone was going to be in the trophy room, Malfoy must have tipped him off."
Harry thought she was probably right, but he wasn't going to tell her that. "Let's go." (pg 159)
She helps Harry with his curiousity as well. What might have transpired that year if Hermione hadn't looked at the floor in that room and related the fact that the dog was guarding a trapdoor to Harry?
Hermione is always interacting with Harry as well. The first time we see this is when they're trapped by Filch in front of the forbidden corridor.
"Oh, move over," Hermione snarled. She grabbed Harry's wand, tapped the lock, and whispered, "Alohomora!"
When Ron ridicules her by saying she was a nightmare and no one could stand her, it's Harry she knocks into as she rushes past.
Harry finally begins to return her attentions at Halloween when the troll is loose. Harry is the one who thinks of her, and he's the one who suggests going to tell her. It's also interesting to note that though they both sprinted back to unlock the door, Harry is the one who reaches and unlocks it. He is also the one who initiates the fight against the troll and ran to pull Hermione out the door. When he couldn't get her to budge, he ran at the troll, and through luck, stuck his wand up it's nose, and hung desperatly for his life. This is the point where Ron finally gets moving. It took Harry's life being endangered for him to get motivated.
Hermione takes the full blame about the troll. We know she's grateful to the boys for saving her, but it really must've taken a lot for her to both break the rules, and lie to not just one, but three of her teachers. Just to save Harry from trouble. She also goes over both Harry's and Ron's homework for them so that they'll be able to get better grades.
Hermione is there for Harry's nerves as well. She wheedles him about eating the day of his first Quidditch match, and helps to make a banner to show their support for him. She also saves his life.
Hagrid said his voice shaking. "Can't nothing interfere with a broomstick except powerful Dark magic - no kid could do that to a Nimbus Two Thousand."
At these words, Hermione seized Hagrid's binoculars, but instead of looking up at Harry, she started looking frantically at the crowd.
"What are you doing?" moaned Ron, gray-faced.
"I knew it," Hermione gased, "Snape - look."
(snip Ron scanning crowd and seeing Snape mutter) "He's doing something - jinxing the broom," said Hermione.
"What should we do?"
"Leave it to me." (pg 190)
Before Ron could say another word, Hermione had disappared. Ron turned the binoculars back on Harry.
When Hermione returns after Christmas break and hears of Harry's adventures, she's torn between two emotions. Horror and dissapointment. Horror that he could've gotten caught (endangered himself) and dissapointed that he didn't find out about Flamel (reached his goal that she's helping him with). She's horrified when she finds out Snape is refereeing their next Quidditch match and tries to convince him not to play. She even breaks the rules for him again by practicing a curse, and bringing her wand to the match fully prepared to jinx Snape. But she's ecstatic when Harry finds the chocolate frog card with Flamel's name and she can finally hand him the information he needs.
Hermione jumped to her feet. She hadn't looked so excited since hey'd gotten back the marks for their very first piece of homework. (pg 219)
Her anxiety for Harry's safety consumes her so much that she doesn't even hear or notice a brawl right behind and under her.
Hermione stood up, her crossed fingers in her mouth, as Harry streaked toward the ground like a bullet. (and later) "Come on, Harry!" Hermione screamed, leaping onto her seat to watch as Harry sped straight at Snape - she didn't even notice Malfoy and Ron rolling around under her seat, or the scuffles and yelps coming from the whirl of fists that was Neville, Crabbe, and Goyle. (and later) "Ron! Ron! Where are you? The game's over! Harry's won! We've won! Gryffindor is in the lead!" shrieked Hermione, dancing up and down on her seat and hugging Parvati Patil in the row in front. (pp 223-4)
She gives so many clues to the fact that she's always concerned and thinking about him. His delay in returning to the castle after the Quidditch match caused her enough concern to ask his whereabouts in a squeak (pg 227). She draws up a study schedule for him to follow as she knows he's thinking more about the Sorcerer's Stone than his schoolwork. She butters up Hagrid to get information out of him, just to help Harry. She sits with him in the common room waiting for Ron to get back from Hagrid's, and she breaks the rules to help Harry get Norbert out. And during their detention Hermione runs down the path in front of Hagrid, outstripping him in her concern to get to Harry and make sure he's all right. Then comforting him with reminders of Dumbledore's presence being his safety during his panic afterwards.
The end of the year events come so quickly that Hermione can barely keep up with both Harry and her exams. But she manages to comfort him about Voldemort several times, while still helping him out with his plans to trail Snape, and get the stone. She seems so upset when she comes back to the common room having lost Snape's trail. The whole time they're going through the challenges, Hermione is constantly worried as are they all. She gets so panicky over seeing them tangled in the devil's snare that she loses her head, though she's able to recall what will repel the plant. She screams when Ron is sacrificed in the chess game, but stays on her square and charges forward with Harry when they win. The potion room is where Hermione's strengths shine through, and her concern and love for Harry shine here as well.
Hermione's lip trembled, and she suddenly dashed at Harry and threw her arms around him.
"Hermione!"
"Harry - you're a great wizard, you know."
"I'm not as good as you," said Harry, very embarrassed, as she let go of him.
"Me!" said Hermione. "Books! And cleverness! There are more important things - friendship and bravery and - oh Harry - be careful!" (pp 286-7)
She is so reluctant to leave Harry that she stands in danger of having the potion wear off before she gets through the fire. Harry has to yell at her to get her to actually go. Then her reaction to seeing him in the hospital wing afterwards is precious.
"Harry!"
Hermione looked ready to fling her arms around him again, but Harry was glad she held herself in as his head was still very sore.
"Oh, Harry, we were sure you were going to - Dumbledore was so worried - "
(snip Ron's comments and part of the narrative of Harry's narrative)Ron and Hermione were a very good audience; they gasped in all the right places, and when Harry told them what was under Quirrell's turban, Hermione screamed out loud. (pg301)
Hermione sticks around Harry for as long as she can. She's the one who has the last words to say to him before he leaves with the Dursley's at King's Cross.
